The Apple iMac That Created Wikipedia Is Up for Auction
When it comes to finding information on the Internet, you can’t go past Wikipedia. Whether you’re looking for an actor’s filmography or the definition of a word, Wikipedia has it all. While you can’t always trust what you read, for the most part, Wikipedia does provide reliable information and is one of the largest resources on the web.
The concept of a free online encyclopedia that anyone with the Internet could access was the brainchild of Jimmy Wales and his partners. Originally known as Nupedia (thank god the name changed), a number of setbacks led to Wales almost abandoning the project until a personal issue sparked his creativity on Boxing Day 2000.
Wales’ first child was born with a serious medical condition and after she was taken to intensive care he raced home and got online to find out as much about the condition as possible. Back then the net was still in its infancy and finding facts and data were challenging. This sparked Wales into action. He installed a primitive “wiki software” package on January 15, 2001, and Wikipedia was born, and the rest, as they say, is history.
To achieve his goal Wales used an old school Apple iMac, which is now up for auction via Christie’s. While now obsolete, the Strawberry iMac is a great relic of a bygone era when Apple was just beginning to explode as a tech leader. Having been kept in storage for almost the past two decades, the computer’s current bid stands at $8,5000 USD.
The auction closes on December 15 at 2 pm and is expected to eventually sell for somewhere in the region of $20,000. You can place a bid by hitting the button below.
