No, not the day those pesky aliens invaded and Will Smith had to save the world, but that time America escaped from British rule and became a free nation. You know, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, fireworks show, etc.

History lesson aside, the national holiday–a favorite of many–is a fantastic time for family and friends to celebrate everything great about America. If you’re planning on going all out and hosting a 4th of July party you need to be prepared. You can’t just offer your guests a six-pack of cheap beer and a few packets of chips while wearing a pair of ratty shorts and flip-flops. Well, to be honest, you could do that, but it doesn’t make for a great July celebration.

When it comes to your Independence Day celebration you need to provide booze, keep your friends and family entertained with games, sparklers, and fireworks, and make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. And like all good 4th of July parties, there has to be fireworks. To help you plan the ultimate United States 4th of July party we’ve come up with this handy guide of must-haves to make sure you not only look the part but create a party that’s the best on your street. 18 Famous Landmarks From Around the World  https://nextluxury.com/food-travel/famous-landmarks/ Thu, 06 Apr 2023 19:00:30 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=297012 …]]> Every country around the world has some form of an iconic or famous landmark. In some cases, mother nature created these awe-inspiring locations in renowned cities while great artists and architects designed others. Many of these constructed landmarks have become synonymous with their respective countries, such as the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Taj Mahal in India.

There are specific landmarks that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. These landmarks represent the incredible art and architecture of the country’s history. They can even symbolize the love between two people or for one’s country. So let’s travel around the world and discover some of the most famous landmarks that everyone should check out.

18 Famous Landmarks From Around the World

1. Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

India has a rich history with stunning landmarks throughout the country. The most famous is the iconic Taj Mahal, an awe-inspiring landmark known around the globe. It brings in roughly 6 million tourists yearly and has a rich history dating back to the 1600s.

In 1631, the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, commissioned the Islamic ivory-white marble mausoleum following the death of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. At the center of the stunning 42-acre complex is Mumtaz’s tomb. It also includes a guest house, formal gardens, a mosque, and the tomb of Shah Jahan. A masterpiece of Mughal architecture and Muslim art, UNESCO declared the Taj Mahal a World Heritage Site in 1983.

2. The Empire State Building, New York, United States

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a cultural icon and one of New York City’s most famous landmarks. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the 102-story Art Deco skyscraper stands at 1,454 feet. After a year of construction, the historic landmark opened in 1931, making headlines around the globe.

At first, the Empire State Building was anything but historic. It became a running joke during the Great Depression and World War II since it remained empty, gaining the nickname “Empty State Building.” It wasn’t until the 50s that the building’s owners began to turn a profit. It soon became one of America’s most famous tourist attractions.

Upon its debut, the Empire State Building was the tallest in the world. While it no longer holds that title, it remains an iconic New York City landmark. Other iconic New York City landmarks include Grand Central Station and Times Square.

3. Notre Dame de Paris, Paris, France

Notre-Dame de Paris

Regarded as the finest of French gothic architecture, Notre Dame de Paris is another famous landmark well worth a visit. An icon in Paris, France, the Notre Dame cathedral features the famous three-pipe organ, church bells, and colorful rose windows.

Constructed between 1163 and 1260, it suffered extensive damage during the French Revolution in 1790. Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame renewed interest in the iconic landmark as it went through several restoration periods to become one of the most visited landmarks in Paris.

A fire in 2019 almost destroyed the building and plans were made to reconstruct the church with a modern design, but this was quickly squashed. The rebuilding of Notre Dame is set to be completed in 2024.

4. The Great Wall of China, China

Great Wall of China, China

Stretching 13,170 miles throughout China is the country’s most famous symbol, the Great Wall of China. Construction began in the 7th century BC in Imperial China along the borders of the Ancient Chinese states. The primary purpose was to protect against enemies and other threats. It was also a vital trade route along the Silk Road.

Since that time various dynasties have expanded and improved the wall. In addition to serving as a transportation passageway, the Great Wall includes troop barracks, garrison stations, and watchtowers. The Ming Dynasty sections in Beijing are a popular tourist attraction and the most visited area of the Wall.

5. Sydney Opera House, Syndey, Australia

Sydney Opera House

Surrounding Bennelong Point on the Sydney Harbour is the architectural marvel known as the Sydney Opera House. It’s one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks in the world. After winning a competition in 1955, architect Jørn Utzon’s design became the crown jewel of Australia. However, several setbacks and disagreements delayed construction, resulting in Utzon’s resignation from the project.

Queen Elizabeth II finally opened the iconic opera house in 1973. The multi-venue performing center consists of a concert hall, playhouse, studio, drama theatre, the Utzon room, and an outdoor forecourt. The UNESCO World Heritage site is the home to the Sydney Orchestra, Opera Australia, and the Sydney Theatre Company. It’s a popular tourist destination attracting roughly 10 million visitors annually, with 1.2 million attending the 1,500 yearly shows.

6. The White House, Washington DC, United States

The White House

In 1800, President John Adams moved the American capital from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. This is when construction began on the historic landmark, the White House. Top 5 Green Cocktails to Sip on St. Patrick’s Day https://nextluxury.com/food-travel/green-cocktails-to-sip-on-st-patricks-day/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 23:00:57 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=231287 …]]> There’s nothing quite like St. Patrick’s Day. Every March 17th is a day of Irish celebration, with the 18th a day for sore heads.

Green drinks, green beer, green food, green clothing, and epic parades – Paddy’s Day is a hearty nod to the far-flung diaspora of the Emerald Isle. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland but also celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.

The theme is green; shamrocks, Irish flags, and leprechauns are plenty. We’ve compiled a list of 5 green cocktails to sip on St Patrick’s Day that you can create to help enjoy the day’s celebratory atmosphere.

Slainte Mhath!

Top 5 Green Cocktails to Sip on St. Patrick’s Day

1. The Green Dublin Cocktail

green cocktails to sip on st. patrick's day

A popular St Paddy’s cocktail recipe, the Green Dublin features the best of Irish whiskey in a jolly green glass that’s just perfect to roll out when entertaining on March 17th.

Ingredients

Garnish: Fresh mint sprig, 1 green apple cut thinly

Method

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all the ingredients and shake for 30 seconds.

Serve in a martini glass and garnish with mint and a slice of green apple.

2. The Souped Up Shamrock Shake

The-Souped-Up-Shamrock-Shake

Sure, you can hit McDonald’s on St Paddy’s Day for the violent green goodness of the annual Shamrock Shake, or you can craft a cracking version of your own and booze it up considerably (remembering, as always, to drink responsibly).

For those who enjoy a great green cocktail recipe you can chew on (you can treat it like Guinness), you can use less milk or add more ice cream to adjust the consistency to your preference.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1/4 -½ cup milk
  • 2 oz green Creme de Menthe
  • 2 oz vanilla vodka (Absolut or Grey Goose are good cocktail options with a vanilla expression)
  • A splash of green food coloring

Garnish: Whipped cream, sprinkles, and Maraschino cherry

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Put the green drink mixture into the biggest cocktail glass you can find, then go nuts on the sugar with the whipped cream and sprinkles. Add a Maraschino cherry on top to make it pretty.

To make a non-alcoholic version of the Shamrock Shake, it’s a matter of substituting the creme de menthe with a tablespoon of peppermint extract to give it the minty taste and leaving out the vodka entirely.

3. The Green Demon

The-Green-Demon

If you’re looking for a green cocktail with a punchy flavor and a nice kick, look no further than the Green Demon. It’s heavy on alcohol but blends together into a tasty concoction that will keep you moving during St Patrick’s Day.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Midori Melon Liqueur
  • 1 oz vodka (for this cocktail I’d recommend an inexpensive clean vodka like Skyy or Smirnoff)
  • 1 oz white rum (Brugal Extra Dry is a bit lighter in the pants than Wray and Nephew )
  • Lemonade (or a combo of lime juice, club soda, and simple syrup)

Garnish: Fresh Lime wedge

Instructions

Combine the liquor into a large goblet or highball glass half-filled with crushed ice. Top glass with lemonade to taste. Stir together and serve with a fresh wedge of lime.

4. The Midori Illusion

The-Midori-Illusion

The Midori Illusion is always a popular green cocktail recipe, especially with the younger crowd looking to share a few great tasting shooters amongst themselves. When I was coming up, an Illusion was the go-to dancefloor hit – all you needed was a jug and a shot glass or two.  It’s a deliciously sweet mix of melon and pineapple flavors and is a lovely green color to boot.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Midori Melon Liqueur
  • ½ oz vodka (Go for something smooth like Purity vodka)
  • ½ oz triple sec
  • 1 oz lemon juice (can sub with lime juice)
  • 2 oz pineapple juice (tinned is fine but fresh is best)
  • Ice

Garnish: Pineapple wedge

Method

Add ice and all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain contents into an ice-filled rocks glass.

Garnish with a wedge of pineapple.

Note: If you’re hosting or part of a group, go for the Illusion shaker and a shot glass for everyone. It’s fun and friendly.

5. The Bailey’s Mint Martini

Baileys-Mint-Martini

Credit: Lemon Tree Dwelling

There’s nothing like a little Bailey’s Irish Cream in your green cocktail for St Patrick’s day celebrations. If you aren’t looking to start the day with a fortified Bailey’s Irish coffee, then this might be the next best option.

The Mint Martini looks good, tastes great, and is certain to be popular; from the youngster with the fresh ID right through to your grandma who only drinks a glass on Paddy’s Day.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • 1 oz green Creme de Menthe liqueur
  • 1 oz vodka (again, look for something smooth but inexpensive)
  • 1 oz Half and Half (or milk if you prefer)
  • Ice cubes

Garnish: Whipped Cream, chocolate flakes

Method

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes, then add the ingredients together. Shake thoroughly until the mixture is blended and bright green. Strain into a martini glass, or if you’re going large, a margarita glass.

Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate flakes, and serve immediately.

1. Green Guinness Draught

The famous dark Irish dry stout, Guinness has been entrancing customers since 1759 across 150 countries and is the world’s most popular dark beer. Any outfit calling itself an Irish pub has Guinness in the taproom, or at worst, it will be available in can form.  Whatever your choice, it’s a quality Irish Stout made for beer drinkers.

A popular St. Patrick’s Day pastime is to turn your Guinness into a green beer. Start by adding three drops of green food coloring to the bottom of an empty glass, then pour your Guinness beer (stout or blonde, it doesn’t matter) on top.

This method works best because when you pour the beer, it will help mix it into green beer without destroying the aroma and head. You can also adjust the color by adding more dye.

2. Writers Tears Copper Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Irish whiskey is a popular spirit, especially for those who aren’t fans of green beer or Guinness. Writers Tears is a quality, light, sweet Irish whiskey that’s a great introduction for those trying it for the first time on Paddy’s Day.

If you’re a more experienced whiskey lover, Writers Tears expression is outstanding and worth paying for if you’re more inclined to take it easy and sip neat. Writers Tears is made using a mix of single pot still and single malt whiskey, which gives it a taste of golden honey and fruit, which makes it easy to drink neat in a rocks glass.

As a writer that’s had the odd dusty moment myself, I can’t recommend a top-drawer pot still dram highly enough. It’s also handy for use in a traditional Irish cocktail recipe, such as the Green Dublin.

3. Bailey's Irish Cream Liqueur

Baileys-Irish-Cream-Liqueur

Baileys is made with fresh, premium quality Irish dairy cream, finest spirits, Irish whiskey, and a proprietary recipe of chocolate flavors that make it the world’s best-selling liqueur. Over 80% of the raw ingredients and packaging used to make Bailey’s Irish Cream is sourced from the Emerald Isle, and it’s popular with every generation of Paddy’s Day celebrators.

For some, it’s simply a matter of adding ice, while others prefer to drink it with milk or utilize the chocolatey sweet liqueur in a range of different Irish cocktail choices.

4. Bushmills Black Bush

Bushmills-Black-Bush

A well-known whiskey brand every good bar should stock, Bushmills Black Bush is Ireland’s oldest distillery. Opened in 1608, Bushmills has six different blends of whiskey; Red Bush, original, Black Bush, 10 years, 16 years, and 21 years.

My personal favorite is Black Bush. Great for consuming neat, it also adds a touch of sweetness in cocktails, such as an Irish Old Fashioned.

Irish Old Fashioned Cocktail

Irish-Old-Fashioned-Cocktail

Fixing a classic old fashioned Irish whiskey cocktail is a great replacement for quality bourbon, and will ensure you’re not switching between a bunch of different drinks as you settle deeper into St. Paddy’s Day.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Irish Whiskey (Bushmills Black Bush works nicely because it’s smooth and well-balanced)
  • A splash of Simple Syrup (can be left out if you’re utilizing a sweeter Irish whiskey)
  • 3 dashes of orange bitters
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters

Method

Combine ingredients into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice and stir until well-chilled. Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice cubes, and garnish with an orange twist.

5. Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Irish Whiskey

It’s hard to go wrong with Jameson Whiskey, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s smooth, easy-drinking quality that measures up against most of the world’s best spirits.

The Caskmates range may be the best of the Jameson whiskey brand, where the iconic spirit is finished off in Stout barrels (or IPA casks) at the end of the aging process just before bottling. This Jameson whiskey has been finished in stout-seasoned casks to create cocoa notes, butterscotch, and coffee while remaining true to the smoothness of Jameson’s triple-distilled process.

The Original Irish Coffee

Original-Irish-Coffee

I have two ways of looking at the process of drinking an original Irish coffee. It’s a great way to start a bracing St. Patrick’s Day morning before the crowds, parades, and revelry, or the ideal way to set yourself up for a long evening of celebration.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 5 ounces Irish whiskey (the lead-in Jameson whiskey is a perfect choice)
  • 2-3 dollops of lightly whipped heavy cream (can be switched for your cream of choice)

Method

If you aren’t using a mug or an oversized coffee cup, you’ll need to be careful. Glass can crack or shatter if not heat-treated before you begin to pour in the hot coffee.

Pour piping hot coffee into your warmed glass or mug until it is about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Serve hot.

6. Tullamore D.E.W.

Tullamore-D.E.W.

The original triple distilled, triple blend whiskey, Tullamore D.E.W. was created by Daniel E. Williams, hence the D.E.W.

The second-largest-selling brand of Irish whisky in the world, Tullamore is a tasty drop with fruity and caramel notes and a rich finish that goes down a treat. A classic well worth drinking to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, and one that goes well in an Irish Buck cocktail.

The Irish Buck Cocktail

Irish-Buck-Cocktail

The classic Irish Buck is the perfect, simple St. Patrick’s Day whiskey-based cocktail recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (Tullamore D.E.W.’s malty flavor is delightful)
  • 1/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 ounces ginger ale to top (Schweppes or Fever-Tree works well due to the excellent carbonation)

Garnish: lime wedge

Method

Combine the Irish whiskey and lime juice into a highball or cocktail glass filled with crushed ice. Stir together, then top up with ginger ale and stir again gently. Garnish with a lime wedge and serve for a perfect Irish cocktail.

7. Dekuyper Green Creme de Menthe

Dekuyper-Green-Creme-de-Menthe

Check Price

Creme de menthe is a cocktail mixer necessity on St. Patrick’s Day. Why? Because it’s remarkably green, but also versatile enough to use with just about any spirits; rum, vodka, Irish cream liqueur, and even tequila.

The Dekuyper version is a perfect Pat’s accompaniment. It’s mint sprig fresh, yet not overly so, but a good emerald color, and tasty enough to drink by itself.

At 25% ABV it’s easy enough to flourish by itself, but is important for use in a celebratory cocktail. Grab a couple of parties and get it flowing.

The Souped Up Shamrock Shake

Souped-Up-Shamrock-Shake

Sure, you can hit McDonald’s on St. Paddy’s Day for the violent green goodness of the annual Shamrock Shake, or you can craft a cracking version of your own and booze it up considerably (remembering, as always, to drink responsibly).

For those who enjoy a great green cocktail recipe you can chew on (you can treat it like Guinness), you can use less milk or add more ice cream to adjust the consistency to your preference.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1/4 -½ cup milk
  • 2 oz green Creme de Menthe
  • 2 oz vanilla vodka (Absolut or Grey Goose are good cocktail options with a vanilla expression)
  • A splash of green food coloring

Garnish: Whipped cream, sprinkles, and a Maraschino cherry

Method

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Put the green drink mixture into the biggest cocktail glass you can find, then go nuts on the sugar with the whipped cream and sprinkles. Add a Maraschino cherry on top to make it pretty.

To make a non-alcoholic version of the Shamrock Shake, it’s a matter of substituting the creme de menthe with a tablespoon of peppermint extract to give it the minty taste and leaving out the vodka entirely.

8. The Irishman Single Malt Irish Whiskey

The-Irishman-Single-Malt-Irish-Whiskey

This Irishman Single Malt is one of only a handful of Irish triple-distilled single malts available, triple distilled and aged in Bourbon and Sherry Casks. Each batch is limited to a maximum of 6,000 bottles, which is great at ensuring quality through every bottle.

It’s not the green gear that excites and entices the younger St. Patrick’s Day partier, but a steady, well-crafted drop suited to those who have lived through a few parades and overcooked the odd celebration.

9. Magners Original Cider

Magners-Original-Cider

While many enjoy Bulmers, I lean towards Mangers when it comes to my favorite Irish cider. Originally made by Bulmers, it was sold to Magners in Northern Island and has gone on to be a smash across Britain.

Designed as a refreshing tipple to have over ice, the original Magners cider uses 17 different types of apples pressed and slowly fermented over several months. It’s a delicious summer drink and a great way to kick off your St. Patrick’s day festivities.

10. Dingle Original Gin

Dingle-Original-Gin

Check Price

You’d be forgiven for thinking all the Irish drink is Guinness and whiskey. Both have dominated the Irish market for decades, but things are beginning to change with the introduction of a new player, Dingle.

Established in 1996, Dingle has fast become one of Ireland’s leading distilleries. Their original gin, a dry spirit made from locally foraged botanicals, including rowan berry, Fuschia, bog myrtle, hawthorn, and heather, won the World’s Best Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards.

If that’s not enough to get you on board, each bottle is hand filled and numbered by batch and has a subtle 42.5% ABV. Yum!

14 Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations https://nextluxury.com/food-travel/dangerous-tourist-destinations/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 16:00:58 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=293135 …]]> Traveling is one of the greatest things you can do in life. The ability to jump on a plane and fly to a foreign country and discover new cultures is about as fulfilling as it gets. As the world is so diverse, there is so much to see, with something for everyone.

Beach lovers can find some of the most pristine coastlines throughout Asia and the Caribbean. History buffs can travel back in time through ancient European cities. Sports lovers can catch all the big games in America. Then there are thrill seekers who want to visit the most dangerous tourist destinations and push themselves to the limit.

These exotic destinations stretch across the earth from New Zealand to Iceland and everywhere in between and are dangerous for a variety of reasons. Some have treacherous landscapes while others are inhabited by wild animals that can kill you in an instant. Then there are different dangers, such as crime, weather conditions, and even car crashes.

The most dangerous tourist destinations might not always seem that deadly, but believe us when we tell you they are only for those who like to live life on the edge. If sunning yourself by the pool drinking cocktails is more your thing, stay away from these spots. For everyone else, get your will in order, grab your passport, and adventure into the unknown.

14 Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations

1. Mount Everest, Nepal

Mount Everest

Anton Rogozin/Shutterstock

It should come as no surprise that Mount Everest makes the list. The highest mountain in the world attracts around 1,200 people yearly who want to test out their endurance by attempting to climb to the very top. According to The New York Times, only half that number succeed, while some even die on their journey. Many people suffer altitude sickness, which can be deadly if not treated, while others succumb to frostbite, hypothermia, and avalanches.

310 people have died climbing Mount Everest, with around 200 bodies left on the mountain, unable to be retrieved. The last deaths occurred in 2021, proving how dangerous the climb really is and why it is one of the most dangerous tourist destinations in the world.

2. Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California

The famed Yosemite National Park is also one of the most dangerous spots for travelers, in particular the Half Dome. This well-known rock formation attracts climbers from all around the world who want to challenge themselves by ascending to the top of this 5,000-foot mountain. The final 400 feet are the most dangerous and rock climbing equipment is needed to reach the summit.

Several people have died attempting to scale Half Dome, with the last major fatalities occurring in 1985 when five hikers were struck by lightning, killing two of them.

3. North Korea

North Korea

Caminhos me Levem/Shutterstock

Dangerous is probably not the right word, but if you step out of line while in North Korea you might never see the Western world again. The only way to visit is by organizing an official tour that includes a guide and armed soldiers making sure you do as you are told. You will be shown only what North Korea wants you to see, which is a thriving city where poverty is non-existent and people love their government.

You don’t really have any control over where you go or what you do and spend your downtime in your hotel. The main danger comes from doing something you shouldn’t which could result in you finding yourself behind bars for a very long time.

4. Death Valley, California

Death Valley National Park

Doug Lemke/Shutterstock

The hottest and driest National Park in America, Death Valley doesn’t quite live up to its name. While it sounds menacing, there is a lot of life in this large stretch of desert, with an abundance of wildflowers and animal life living in the area. That said, you don’t want to go trekking into Death Valley without the proper precautions, which include a shit tonne of water and proper sun protection.

While only a couple of people die in Death Valley every year due to the heat, most people that die out there do so in single-car accidents according to the National Parks Service

5. The Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Amazing Cliffs of Moher at sunset in Ireland

Patryk Kosmider/Shutterstock

The views from the Cliffs of Moher are spectacular, but also just as deadly. One of Ireland’s most famous sights, the cliffs provide incredible views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay. But they are also extremely dangerous. Rising some 700 feet above sea level, there is no fencing to keep you at bay from the edge, with one wrong step meaning you could find yourself falling to your death.

Despite the danger, the Cliffs of Moher were listed by Instagram as the 25th best selfie spot in 2021 and the area continues to attract thousands of people every year. 66 people died at the Cliffs of Moher from 1993 to 2017, with the latest fatality coming in 2019 when an Indian student got too close to the edge and plunged to his death.

Pro tip: wear sturdy shoes and stay at least a few feet away from the edge, especially during winter,

6. New Smyrna Beach, Florida

New Smyrna Beach

Sky Cinema/Shutterstock

You’re probably wondering why a beach in Florida of all places makes the list of dangerous places. Well, the answer lies in the ocean. This surf spot is shark heaven and one of the reasons why Florida is known as the “shark bite capital of the world.”

While you are more likely to die falling out of bed or by being hit by lighting, New Smyrna Beach averages nine shark attacks a year. The last came in September 2022 when a woman was bit while swimming.

7. The Danakil Desert, Ethiopia

ethiopian danakil desert

Michail_Vorobyev/Shutterstock

While it doesn’t quite reach the temperatures of Death Valley, the Danakil Desert does reach over 122 °F during its hottest days, making it almost unbearable. It’s both one of the lowest and hottest places on earth that is home to volcanos and lakes of acid and poisonous gases.

While you can visit the area, it is recommended to take a tour so you are kept safe at all times and have no fear of getting lost and stranded in the harsh desert.

8. Death Road, Bolivia

Death Road in Yungas

milosk50/Shutterstock

Officially known as Yungas Road, this 37-mile stretch of road is a cycle route that connects the city of La Paz and the Yungas region. It runs along a cliff face and is barely able to fit two cars let alone one, but is still used as a major crossing. As the road is dirt, it gets even more dangerous in the winter when it turns to mud.

18 cyclists have died on the road since 1998 while it had an average of around 209 accidents and 96 deaths per year until a new section of road was built that is much safer. The old road is now solely used by bike riders and those who wish to walk along the road and check out the views.

9. Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Mount Washington

The highest peak in the Northeastern United States is another popular tourist destination that’s also quite dangerous. It attracts a diverse crowd, with ski resorts for those who like to hit the powder and plenty of trails and climbs for those who prefer mountaineering.

One of the biggest issues people encounter is the changing weather conditions, with high winds often coming out of nowhere. More than 161 people have died while climbing Mount Washington, either from hyperthermia or bad weather.

10. Devil’s Pool, Zambia

Devil’s Pool in Zambia

Part of Victoria Falls in Africa, the Devil’s Pool is found on the Zambian side of the border. During the dry months when the water levels drop, the Devil’s Pool transforms into one of the most breathtaking natural infinity pools on the edge of Victoria Falls, which also happens to be the world’s highest waterfall.

It’s a great way to experience the Falls in a unique setting but be warned, don’t try going for a dip in the wet season. The river is flooded and the currents are too fast to swim against and will push you over the edge. The Zambian tourist board warns visitors to be careful when venturing into the water and often has guides available to make sure nothing goes wrong.

11. Chernobyl, Ukraine

It’s pretty obvious why this destination makes the list. Chernobyl was where the most horrific nuclear meltdown occurred on April 26, 1986. While only 31 people were officially recognized as dying, the impact the event had on the town and the surrounding area is still being felt today.

Chernobyl is now deserted and while still a radiation-hot zone, there are certain areas that can be visited with tours. These take you into parts of the city where you can see how people up and let without warning, leaving behind their possessions. While the chances of getting radiation poisoning or worse are slim, there is always a chance, which makes it such a dangerous spot to visit.

12. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro

For most, Rio de Janeiro sounds like the ultimate holiday destination. Sandy beaches, Carnival, women with large assets, and plenty of Sun. What more could you want right? Well if you’re not careful you might find yourself looking at the wrong end of a gun.

Rio de Janeiro is riddled with crime due to its high unemployment rate. You don’t want to be walking through the favelas on your own as there’s a good chance you might not make it out. Don’t wander off the beaten track and make sure you keep your valuables safe. The last thing you want is to be robbed while on your dream vacation.

13. Snake Island, Brazil

Ilha da Queimada Grande is no longer open to the public and for good reason. Located off the coast of Brazil, this island is home to the venomous Bothrops insularis (golden lancehead pit viper), a critically endangered species of snake. The snakes got trapped there during the last Ice Age and over time have slowly taken over the island, making it unsafe for humans.

At one point it was believed the island was home to around 430,000 snakes, but that number is now said to be between 2,000-4,000, which is why it’s on the endangered list. Along with the snakes, there is an abundance of bird life along with a non-venomous breed of snake known as Dipsas albifrons.

14. El Caminito del Rey, Spain

El Caminito del Rey walkway

If you have a fear of heights you might want to stop reading. El Caminito del Rey (The King’s Little Path) is a walkway constructed in the 20th century through a narrow gorge in the province of Málaga, Spain. The man-made path winds around steep cliff face where the wrong move equals death.

Built so workers could access the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls, the walkway soon became a tourist destination, with people amazed by the tight pathways with few barriers to hold on to for support. After five people died while traversing the damaged path between 1999-2000, it was shut down for over a decade.

Four years of repairs were undertaken and El Caminito del Rey reopened in 2015. Despite the government doing its best to make the path safer, it still ranks as one of the most dangerous locations in Spain.
